“Cadel Evans – The Road to Glory” is the is the seventh in our series of free bike training videos that are perfect for turbo training workouts.

This 50 minute video charts Cadel’s journey from rural Australia to cycling superstar. Cadel Evans is the first cyclist to be a World Champion in both mountain biking and road cycling.

Cadel Evans, who lives and trains in Switzerland, became the first Australian and only the second non-European rider to win Le Tour in 2011.

Your Turbo Training Workout

Speed Skills and Muscular Endurace

Session Goals: The goals of this session is to improve your pedalling technique by practicing high cadence pedalling, resist the urge to bounce up and down on the saddle by focusing on smoothing out teh pedal stroke and maintaining a strong core and good posture

Set up: As usual get a towel and water bottle set up before you start.

Warm Up:

  • 5:00 Pedal easy at 90rpm
  • 5:00 “Scrape the mud off your feet” on the pull back section of the pedal stroke
  • 5:00 “Kick the football” over the top of your pedal stroke

Main Set:

  • 30:00 Zone 3 RPE 13-15 – Alternate between 95 RPM and 110 RPM every 5:00 minutes

Cool Down:

  • 5:00 progressively easier gear finishing in easiest gear, maintain 90rpm

Borg Scale: Rate of Perceived Exertion – RPE 6-20

To measure your turbo training efforts and easy low tech way to control yourself is using the Borg Scale of RPE or Rate of Perceive Exertion. The turbo training workouts above use this scale:

  • 6 – 20% effort
  • 7 – 30% effort – Very, very light (Rest)
  • 8 – 40% effort
  • 9 – 50% effort – Very light – gentle walking
  • 10 – 55% effort
  • 11 – 60% effort – Fairly light
  • 12 – 65% effort
  • 13 – 70% effort – Somewhat hard – steady pace
  • 14 – 75% effort
  • 15 – 80% effort – Hard
  • 16 – 85% effort
  • 17 – 90% effort – Very hard
  • 18 – 95% effort
  • 19 – 100% effort – Very, very hard
  • 20 – Exhaustion
