After the short transfer from Zurich airport we’ll have lunch before setting up the bikes and setting out on a Welcome Ride to introduce you to riding in the mountains!

Our 40km Welcome ride up the stunning Lauterbrunnen valley is selected to welcome you gently to the Alps with a range of gradients over a steady 18km climb. The ‘Lauter Brunnen’ valley (‘many fountains’) has 72 waterfalls plunging from the vertical cliffs of this classical U shaped glacier cut valley. It was this landscape that inspired J.R.R. Tolkein to write The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings!

Distance: 78km
Cols: Grosse Scheidegg (1,962m)

This truly is the most beautiful Pass I have ever ridden, and with the road closed to cars, it’s an all around 5 Star experience.

Dan Patitucci, Professional Cycling Photographer

On the closed road ascent of the Grosse Scheidegg you’ll be treated to the most beautiful Alpine views in Switzerland as featured in best selling book Mountain Higher. We’ll descend through the Rosenlaui Valley that feeds the infamous Reichenbach falls where Sherlock Holmes met an untimely death at the hands of his arch enemy Moriarty.

Friday – Beatenberg

Saturday – To Ticino

After a morning transfer to the Italian speaking region of Ticino we will collect our race numbers and take a relaxed 25km out and back spin along the opening section of the course to familiarize ourselves with the cobbles and the deceptive false flat that the Granfondo Gottardo kicks off with.

Dinner at our conveniently located hotel right next to the start of the Granfondo San Gottardo is a great opportunity to eat plenty of pasta before race day and get an early night.

Sunday – Granfondo Gottardo

Magazine Reviews

Cycling Weekly

Each col has its own character, the most interesting of which is the beautiful cobbled sections and hairpin turns of the 19km Saint Gotthard.

Hannah Reynolds, Cycling Weekly

Cyclist Magazine

Last comes the Nufenen Pass, which peaks at 2,478m with an average gradient of 8.5% and spikes of over 20%. My nonchalance at the event’s modest distance has quickly evaporated..

Granfondo Gottardo FAQs

For general questions about all Brevet Cycling Holidays please see our FAQs.

The following information relates directly to our Granfondo Gottardo Sportive Holiday:

Q: Does this package include guaranteed Granfondo Gottardo entry?

A: Yes. Your holiday includes guaranteed entry to the Granfondo Gottardo sportive.

Q: I have a Granfondo Gottardo entry place – can I still join the Brevet group?

A: Yes. We will give you a coupon code to reduce your holiday balance payment by the same amount as the Granfondo Gottardo entrance fee.

Q: I’d like to bring my non cycling partner – is that possible?

A: Yes. Non cycling partners are very welcome and where possible they can even follow the riders in the Brevet Team Car for one of our warm up rides to enjoy the spectacular scenery. If your partner likes the outdoors then they will enjoy being in the mountains and spending some time hiking in the Swiss Alps.

To add your place press “Continue Shopping” and on this page select “Twin or Double Occupancy” and “Deposit”. Press “Add to Cart” again and you should now have both deposits in your Cart ready to Checkout.

For step by step booking instructions see our How To Pay guide.

Q: I’d like to come for the weekend only – is that possible?

A: Yes. We offer a weekend Granfondo Gottardo Sportive Weekend package.

Can we try and persuade you to join us for the week?

We believe that your holiday time is precious. Getting away from the commitments of family, friends and work is important for our souls. Spending time riding in the mountains is the perfect antidote to our busy lifestyles.

But, the mountains are unpredictable. It’s not unknown for mountain passes to be blocked by snow in the middle of the summer and for sportives to be cancelled or badly effected by the weather. That’s why all our sportive holidays include warm up rides in the days leading up to the sportive so that you are guaranteed to get in some unforgettable rides!

So…re-work that schedule and give you and your bike the holiday you deserve!
